Link to Goodreads (ONLY HOPELESS): https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5484153383 This is a group review of all the books in the Hopeless series by Colleen Hoover. Each book is divided in its own section and will be posted individually on Goodreads, but in one giant block on my website. There are trigger warnings for all of the reviews. There are also spoiler warnings. Hopeless 3/5 Stars The more I read Hoover’s books, the more I regret them. I don't know if I admire her or hate her for writing about such big topics that aren’t really written about. In this case, Hoover wrote about rape, child rape, rape done by family members, kidnapping, domestic abuse, and suicide. I think that's all, but I could be wrong. I also predicted the plot twist. At least the first one. I also got part of the second plot twist the more it was talked about. There was just too much problematic stuff that I simply couldn’t rate this book more and I can’t write more of this review. The only reason why I liked this book enough to give it three stars is that it ended happily. It ended up with her being safe, and with the guy she loves, and everything was good in the world. Though I wish we did get some more closure. I wanted to know more about how things would happen next. It felt like the book ended after the final reveal. I guess that makes sense, as that's what the whole book is about. Also why was there so much joking about ‘getting pregnant this weekend’ when they literally just met the day before? What’s Hoover’s deal with characters having children, secret ones, and ones they lost custody of? Hoover is obsessed with all that. Losing Hope 3/5 Stars I loved the fact that this book was HOPELESS through the male main character’s point of view. I liked seeing snippets that we didn't get to see in HOPELESS, namely his own life and things that didn't fit in well with HOPELESS. Like what happened with his sister, other reasons why she decided to commit suicide - though that doesn't mean people need to have a reason - other than the snippet we were given in HOPELESS. I also loved the idea of writing a letter to her. I'm a sucker for journal entries and things in stories. Though I didn't understand or like the and-a-half and-three-quarters chapters. They really bothered me. Even though I enjoyed getting Holder’s point of view, it felt like details were severely lacking. We only knew about some things if we had read HOPELESS beforehand. Things were jumped over, scenes were not mentioned. But don't worry, all the dialogue was the same. Everything was spoken word for word, it got to the point that I started skimming the words and the same scenes because I didn't want to read everything all over again when just reading it. My big hope for this book was to see more about the before - before Hope got kidnapped before Leslie committed suicide. I got that, I am happy with what details we were given. I had also hoped to get more after details. We were given some, but not nearly enough. I also liked how we got information about Holder and what he does without Sky, but I felt like those details were just to set up the next book. Especially the random conversation his best friend said about the supply closet. Because that was the whole premise of FINDING CINDERELLA. Even though I felt it was super stupid. Finding Cinderella 2/5 Stars This book made me smile a lot, but it wasn't enough for me to like this book. The biggest thing I disliked about this book was Hoover’s letter in the front. I had no idea that this book was originally online for free. If I knew that, I would not have paid the same price I paid for the first two books for only a quarter of the quantity. I feel like I was ripped off and it should have been cheaper. But what we missed in quantity, we sure got in drama and details. This was such a roll-wind book that I honestly have no idea what I just read. It starts off with them hooking up in the dark supply closet at school - without knowing what each other looks like, their name, or their age. That’s seriously fucked up. Who thinks about that? And the fact that they did it by pretending to make love to each other because neither of them had ever done that? Seriously, what's the big deal about needing to have sex or make love in high school? Why can't that shit wait for you when you're older? Then a year later they meet up again - not knowing that they already hooked up. Because how would they have known? Only this time they decide to start dating the day after they met. And don't worry, they don't have sex at all in this book. Not once in the three or so months they've been dating at that point. However, his best friend - also the boyfriend of her best friend - forbade them to date. So they do it in secrecy. While pretending to hate each other and to date his on again and off again girlfriend. For all of one chapter because this book is only 10 chapters long. But there's a reason for that. We find out that that one time they had sex - sorry made love - resulted in a pregnancy. One that she decided to give up, without telling him - because how would she be able to - in a foreign country where she was studying abroad. Rightfully, he freaks out after learning this. Ignore her for two very short chapters. Then they get back together after a fight. He meets her brothers and they interrogate him - the only family he meets. Then she meets his family - all of which without sharing their secret child in another country. The book then ends with him blurting out this secret to his best friend - only because Six finds out about Sky's past and was afraid to talk to her since she was a kidnapped child and didn't know that Sky knew about it. I swear this part was only mentioned because Hoover forgot about it and decided that the best friends should know that serious thing. You know, serious details and all. I honestly think this review is longer than the book, despite it being a literal summary of it. I changed my mind. I hate this book. It was a waste of money and my day. All Your Perfects 4/5 Stars This book was so beautiful and it hit me right in my emotions. Infertility is something that isn’t talked about a lot. And because it’s not talked about, the effects it leaves on marriages aren’t talked about either. I love the concept of writing about how the characters fell in love, and where they were at currently. Although it hurt to read, I loved it. This book especially hurt, as I fear infertility is in my future - I have no idea why, I’ve just always had this feeling - it scared me, but it also reminded me how important communication is. Except of course, if you have a husband that watches your every movement and knows exactly what’s wrong with you, writes it down in a box that you have to open to avoid getting a divorce. Side note, I loved this idea. I love that writing letters - and keeping them going - can help their relationship and give them reminders of how things were when they just fell in love. I do wish that we got more of them together again happily. I love that there was an emotional moment between them where they got all their problems out. I just feel like the “fix” happened too quickly and they bounced back like they were in a depression for six years. I guess that’s what happens when you’re soulmates and are brought together by fate. We can’t forget that, it was mentioned many times. I understand but also hate that Graham did the one thing that would hurt Quinn - especially because it’s what brought them together. The only reason why I’m not entirely upset is because he didn’t let it go too far, he quit his job so it won’t happen again, and he did it because it would be the only way Quinn would get a divorce and have a chance to marry someone who has children and give her a chance to have kids. I love that they moved to a different country. One that gives them a fresh start - and a dog. I felt like it was necessary for their recovery - and it helped to be by her sister. I love how they turned their infertility into an inside joke to freak out people to ask inappropriate questions about them having kids. Because in all honesty children or possible children are nobody’s business besides the parents. Even though I knew this book was part of the HOPELESS series, I forgot - until the epilogue. Where they mention Six - and then I knew what happened next and what the next book was about. I feel like all the progress Quinn and Graham was for nothing. He finally made her feel like it was okay to not have children, that their lives would still be great and full with one another. Then randomly they have a chance for a closed adoption from a single teen mother who doesn’t live in that country? Life doesn’t happen like that. I feel like it erases everything this book worked for and gives parents dealing with infertility false hope. The only reason why I didn’t change my review for this is because all the above is my opinion. It didn’t actually happen in this book either. Finding Perfect ⅕ Stars I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel like Hoover doesn’t give a shit about Daniel and Six. She constantly treats Daniel like an idiot, and Six is such a flat character. I felt like ALL YOUR PERFECTS was an intermission for their story, and it wasn’t thought out so well. How is ALL YOUR PERFECTS such an emotionally beautiful book about people dealing with infertility smack dam in the middle of two books where the characters hooked up in a dark supply closet, not knowing what each other looks like - resulting in a kid - that one put up for adoption in a foreign country without telling the other? Like I said in my ALL YOUR PERFECTS review, not to mention I feel like all the progress Quinn and Graham was for nothing. He finally made her feel like it was okay to not have children, that their lives would still be great and full with one another. I like that ALL YOUR PERFECTS painted such a beautiful story about how couples struggle with infertility, to the point of ending their marriage and being able to fix it. FINDING PERFECT made me feel like Hoover went “jk, lol. Let’s have them magically adopt a foreign exchange teenager's son and let them live happily ever after as parents.” Daniel and Six’s books are such a joke and nothing like the Hoover stories I’m used to. Link to Goodreads: Archer's Voice: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5480782047 Travis: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5484100556 ARCHER'S VOICE: 5/5 Stars This book. Oh my gosh. This book is simply amazing. There were so many emotions I felt throughout this book. Archer’s Voice is such a beautiful story and I demand everybody needs to read this book. The biggest takeaway from this book is to remember everybody has a voice, some may be different than others. But it's important to take the time and listen to other people, in whichever way they may be talking. I honestly don’t know how to write this review, I love this book and have no notes about it. My reviews are usually long, but I don’t think this one will be long. It made me so happy, sad, and just in love. I don't know how else to say it. TRAVIS: 4/5 Stars I loved this book, but not to the extent of ARCHER’S VOICE. Despite having to run out and pick it up after I finished it. Even though this book was shorter than ARCHER’S VOICE, I felt like it was dragging on toward the end, and I couldn't really get into this book as much as I did with ARCHER’S VOICE. I originally thought these two books were going to be extremely similar - at least the basic plot it - a girl comes into the Hale’s town for a temporary trip to find comfort and falls in love with one of them and stays in their town forever. But as I was reading the book, my mind changed. I fell in love with both Haven and Travis. I have seen reviews that they were hesitant to read this book because of their previous feelings towards Tarvis, such as not forgiving him, but I did that a long time ago. I felt like Travis was a guy who just wanted to be loved. His mother loved him with circumstances attached, he was under the impression his father left him and loved his other son more (which he didn't know was his brother at this point), and had nobody else was there for him. So in ARCHER’S VOICE when Bree came into town, it was a new person. Someone who didn't know what had happened. Someone who had a chance to love him without question. But once he saw that Bree cared more about Archer, he stepped up his game and tried to take her from him. But that was the only thing he knew. He only knew how to compete with others. Especially his brother who he was under the impression that his father loved more. And then at the end of ARCHER’S VOICE, everything fell apart, and he lost everything. He was sent to the end of the social ladder, because of his mother’s actions. So, TRAVIS, was all about his fall from the top, to accepting himself and the town, with a few fumbles throughout. I really loved it. I love how he had to move into a b and b - which just so conveniently was where his love interest is. I love that he had to change himself and work for the better. I love that he was able to experience something similar to Archer’s and Bree’s. I love that we got to see what they were like as a family with their children - even though their daughter’s name was changed. I love that this book picked up right after ARCHER’S VOICE. I just didn't get into to it as much or love it as much as ARCHER’S VOICE, which is why Im giving it four stars. Read April 2023
Link to Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/review/show/5469631273 2/5 Stars I liked this book a bit, but I know it’s not my favorite. But I also know that it is not my least favorite - THINGS I CAN’T FORGET - is still my least favorite. I liked the concept of this book, I am a sucker for friends-to-lovers stories. I also liked how this series followed different sports or activities. And I also liked how characters were mentioned from previous books. And ultimately, I loved the bonus epilogue from one special character that wraps up the series. But there was a lot about this book that I hated. As I mentioned in previous books, Miranda should not write sex scenes. They make me entirely too uncomfortable and they are not written well. And as a smut reading, I usually like reading these scenes. Smut scenes in this book made me feel icky. They were written out like a step-by-step guide on how to seduce your best friend into having sex with you and teaching you what sex is all about. Maggie seemed to pressure Levi into having sex, only caring about herself and wanting to learn how to have sex before she got into college. Because we all know sex is the only thing that happens in college, and that sex can only be no strings attached rather than relationships. I really hate how this book is marketed to fourteen and up kids. The materials are far too advanced for this age group. As I said, it was a step-by-step guide on how to have sex, how to force your friend to teach you, and a poor representation of how high school and college are so obsessed with sex. That scene Maggie had with the college guy made me want to vomit. “Big, juicy steak dinner” and “spank me”, were on the top of the list. I don't judge how people like sex, but I judge authors mocking a community that treats others with care - even if the situations don't seem like it. The biggest one being everything is done with consent from both parties. I like how despite all this, Maggie was focused on her swimming. I like how she managed to ignore her competition and find a new course in swimming. She became more comfortable with herself all around. Read April 2023
Link to Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/review/show/5469625538 3/5 Stars This book had so much potential, but it didn't live up to it. The book just seemed bland and basic, with a lot of big things that were mentioned, but not dived in and discussed. First, it was a second-chance romance. There were mentions of “we finished things we started years ago” when nothing really happened. Just mutual crushes that never have a chance to expand. And the reasoning behind that was another moment that could have been expanded. The love interest failed the first time because he had a learning disability. The way this was handled seemed poor. I like that Taylor tried so hard to make Ezra believe that nothing was wrong with it - because nothing is. Third, parents’ expectations. I’m glad things seemed to straighten out at the end. At least on Taylor’s side. Her dad decided to stop acting like a douche and let his daughter do what she wants. Her mother didn’t seem to care one way to the other. But Ezra’s parents decided his going for a different major and job is the end of the world. Finally, the biggest problem wasn’t addressed much. That being drugs - taking and selling. This was such a big problem and didn’t have any real conclusion. Taylor said she needed to take the pills to help her study - wouldn’t she be addicted in some way? Or want it more? Ben should have faced some consequences for his actions. More than just being told to not come back. He needed consequences from the school. Or did he chose not to come clean to them, where it really matters? I think that’s it for the big problems that weren’t addressed. I also didn’t like the soccer scene. Soccer is boring for one, for me anyway. And yes, I know there’s some irony in reading about a character who plays soccer. But the good things didn’t come into play much. Sure she got close friends. But not everyone got close. There was no closure with the mean captain. There were too many characters in this book. Why did everyone on the team have to have a name? They weren’t important. Why wasn’t their more mention of the other Hundred Oaks characters? Just a few paragraphs and one small scene of how they stood up to their parents. Overall, this book just made me want more. I was disappointed in this. Read April 2023
Link to Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5469624054 4/5 Stars I really love this book. I love how it was two people figuring out what they love to do and doing whatever they could to make it happen. I love how they chased their desires without worrying about other people. I love how most of the book happened in one day. I didn't like how this book tried so hard to copy Ferris Buller’s Day Off. The similarities were acknowledged as they mentioned the movie many times. But there was just too much. The fact that they took a red car out on a joyride was too much and annoying. I was also bothered by the sheer number of bike and car names that were thrown out. Not to mention all the celebrities’ names. The judges being all actual famous people made me cringe hard. If you’re going to make up a tv music competition show, make up famous people as well. We get that Maya likes to be a rocker, and likes to channel celebrities, but seeing how she mimics their outfits every day was just annoying. It seemed like she was trying too hard to prove herself like she was putting on a show. Even then, I enjoyed her character. I love how she was different from the other books, how she was more set on who she is and knows herself more. She knows who she is and what she wants. And she knows how supportive her family is. This is another reason why I loved this book. I love how supportive everyone is, especially her family. I especially loved that this book wrapped around the main characters from the first book, but we were able to get a closer look at the guy’s family perspective. I loved how supportive her family was, and how they were there every step of the way. They tried all they could to support her, though some of it felt a bit unrealistic; having a friend they can stay with in New York, finding a way she can compete next year - when her boyfriend isn't a judge, and being able to bypass the early stages. But any step of the way, her family was with her. Unlike Jesse’s family. I appreciated that not everything was perfect. Not everyone was happy. Sure it was sad, but it was realistic. Not everybody gets along and accepts people. It sucks, but that's how the world is. I don't really know where that came from, but it's true. Ultimately I love that there was so much familial support, people chasing their dreams, reminding each other of how much they love the things they do - music. I love that this book took place mainly in one day - at least one-third of the book. This book made me happy. Read March 2023
Link to Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show/5452931387?book_show_action=false 4/5 Stars I did enjoy this book quite a bit. I love how the main focus wasn't a relationship. I love how they started as friends and just grew together, navigating what they are to each other - one has lost a partner and the other an adrenaline junkie who can never settle down. I love how this book wasn't a love triangle or having to guess who she would end up with. I like that it was a simple romance, one that grew out of a close friendship. The only thing that bothered me was that Annie had a weird introduction in the last book, it made it super obvious that the next book would be about her - granted that I read this after knowing that fact. But when she was mentioned in the last book, it was all about how she spent her time with her boyfriend. And then in this book, we learn right away that her boyfriend died. We didn't learn how he died until about halfway through the book. I get that the actual death and how it happened was triggering to the character, but I hated that it was just hinted at and ghostly mentioned. I also love how it called back characters from previous books - Matt and Kate. I love how it showed Matt’s job and gave him more of a personality. This is one of my favorite things about series where the focus isn't on the same characters throughout all the books. I do have to say that Jeremiah didn't stand out much in Matt’s book, so it was like reading about a brand-new character. Which was fine, I grew to love him. It was just weird having him be attached to a character I remember quite a bit about. Not to mention all the siblings. I didn't remember them either. I didn't quite like how quickly the two characters got together. Especially since it happened in public. I have concluded that Miranda doesn't need to write sex scenes, because they are the most comfortable part of the book. I didn't enjoy the ending. The whole book was leading up to the marathon, and then it cuts off right at the start. I mean, I understand why it happened. The race wasn't the purpose of the book. It wasn't the main priority. I love that this book focused so much on friendship. As mentioned above, the main characters started as friends. This book also showed reconnection as best friends, new friends, and mutual friend connections. That is one of the reasons why I rated this book so highly. I love that friendship is one of the most important themes. Read March 2023
Link to Goodreads:www.goodreads.com/review/show/5446187631 4/5 Stars I have to say, this is my favorite book by Miranda! I absolutely loved this one. This book made me happy to read it. I love Savannah and how determined was to help her family as well as chase her dreams. She constantly stepped up and help out her father and stepmother make money, to try and help them make money for their future daughter. I love that Sannah never got upset that her father moved her to a new state. She knew it was needed to help get more money and better support. She never once got mad about it. Until her father tried interfering with her life. He thought he could be in charge of her life, who she could talk to, who she could date, what job she could have currently, and what job she wants to have in the future. Savannah had just a good head on her shoulder, she spent the entire book helping others. As mentioned above, she constantly helped her parents with finances. She took care of the horse who only liked her. She helped out with racing said horse. She helped influence the farm/race track expansion. She respected the decision the owner in training made. (This was my first time reading a book where only the main character can fix a horse. It was as cringy as expected, but I still loved it.) She deserved all the rewards and joys she experienced. Racing Star, going to college, getting that great job we learned she has in BREATH, ANNIE, BREATH. I simply love Savannah and found her to be my favorite character of Miranda’s. That is why RACING SAVANNAH is my favorite book of the series. However, there were some things I didn't like. I didn't like how there wasn't much detail, things were more so mentioned rather than explaining it. I didn't like the constant use of “That’s when…”. I felt like it was more about showing things that happened and throwing them out of the moment. I also disliked the sex scenes. I hate how they were just one sentence that mentioned it but didn't explain it. I wish they didn't happen. They weren’t important to the story. It wasn't necessary. Another thing that bothered me was the random paragraph at the end that mentioned Annie. It was so random and was done just to set up her book. Oh, so she was friends with a friend and stopped hanging out with her because she got a boyfriend? And now she spends all her time with him? Too bad we learn in her book her boyfriend died. I usually love how Miranda calls back characters from previous books and how they are all somewhat related. It did bother me that this book had two of the family characters get together. I felt like it cheated us out of a book. I wish we would have gotten that. Read March 2023
Link to Goodreads: www.goodreads.com/review/show/5446186116 1/5 Stars What was the real difference between this book and the last one? Both had plots where the main character was dealing with her feelings in regard to religion, and that wasn't mentioned in the information or description of the book. Also, did both of these books leave the problem unresolved? Come to think of it, most of the conflict in this book was left unresolved. Everything was lightly mentioned at the end, but not in depth. More so like the readers had to figure out what the book was implying. As mentioned above, the whole religion thing. There really wasn't anything stated other than her understanding that it's okay to not believe everything fully and in full force, and not everybody has to have the same beliefs. Which yeah, that is a good message to share. But wouldn't you think to mention it in the description or information? This book could be described as anti-abortion, anti-choice, and anti-sex before marriage, and religion and God are the only things to believe in. All of this made me want to stop reading so many times, especially because of how often it was all brought up, but I powered through. Another thing that really wasn't resolved was what she decided she wanted to study in college. The only thing mentioned was some paintings and what the professor thought about them. In fact, the last line of the book was “so I told her”. IT DOESN'T TALK ABOUT THE PAINTING OR ANYTHING! That's how the book ended. It felt so random and abrupt. Especially how it had her ex-best friend was the one to ask the question. How did they make up? Sure she sent an email and that was described in the book, but that was it. The book also implied that the old best friend reconnected with her ex-boyfriend, but how did that happen? There was so much trauma and unknown trauma in this book, things were just implied and not straight out mentioned like I wish they were. Among the things I wish were mentioned was Brad’s abuse from his father. This was just glossed over. It really wasn't right stated or explained. I get that it wasn't a major part of the book and didn't deal with the characters, but I wanted more. Another thing was the volunteer papers for Planned Parenthood in the main characters' possessions. That was something that went against her beliefs the last time we talked to her. So why is she suddenly a volunteer? What got her to that point? Something that we got some more information about, but not enough was her belief with sex before marriage. I love that once she refigured this out - AFTER SHE ALREADY DID STUFF - she stuck to her beliefs. I don't like that there were sex scenes. It didn't fade to black like other YA books. There was a legitimate sentence that explained a hand job and that sentence made me more uncomfortable than descriptive BDSM smut scenes. Nothing was explained, it was just brushed over. LIKE EVERYTHING ELSE IN THIS BOOK. This book had so much potential. It was made to tackle so many issues, though nothing was dealt with fully. Religion, premarital sex, abortion, child abuse, and more - all mentioned and not flushed out. It was like Miranda wanted to write about these things, but when she got a chance to, she no longer wanted to. I don't know why, it wasn't like the main plot of the book was detailed either. I loved the concept of a summer camp story and romance. I especially love a romance with an old lover - even if it's a kiss at thirteen, I thought that was adorable. But even that felt like it could have more. I'm not sure what, but I know there could be more. Something like seeing her confidence in herself, more than just running again and making friends. Another thing would be remembering what a character looks like. There were three pages that mentioned many times that the main girl had black hair. And things that they did together, running. What hair color is on the cover? Brown. What are they doing on the cover? Riding bikes. This book had so much potential, and so many important things were mentioned. Nothing was flushed out or resolved. It makes me very upset to give this book 1 star. |
